Pest Patrol: Stop Critters Before Spring

Even though winter is winding down, February is a critical month for pest prevention. In Florida, mild temperatures keep pests active year-round, and as early signs of spring emerge, rodents, roaches, spiders, and ants become more active indoors while searching for food and shelter. Taking preventive action now—sealing entry points, controlling moisture, and eliminating food sources—can help you avoid costly infestations as temperatures rise.

Common Winter-to-Spring Pests in Florida

Rodents: Rats and mice continue to seek warm nesting areas inside walls, attics, and garages. Their gnawing can damage wiring, insulation, and structural components.

Cockroaches: German and American roaches (palmetto bugs) remain drawn to the warmth and moisture of kitchens and bathrooms.

Ants: Carpenter ants and ghost ants become more noticeable indoors as outdoor food sources are still limited.

Spiders: Spiders move inside to hunt prey and overwinter in quiet spaces like closets and basements.

Termites: Drywood and subterranean termites may begin early swarming activity as the weather warms, posing hidden structural risks.

February Pest Prevention Checklist

Fortify your home this month with a focus on exclusion, sanitation, and moisture control.

Seal & Secure Entry Points

Inspect doors and windows—replace worn weather stripping and install door sweeps.

Repair window screens and ensure windows close tightly.

Seal foundation cracks, wall gaps, and openings around utility lines or cables.

Add screens to attic vents, chimneys, and crawl spaces to block pest entry.

Manage the Outdoor Environment

Trim trees and shrubs away from the house to prevent pest “bridges.”

Remove leaves, mulch, and yard debris near the foundation.

Store firewood at least 20 feet from your home and elevate it off the ground.

Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent standing water that attracts roaches and mosquitoes.

Reduce Indoor Moisture & Food Sources

Fix leaky pipes, faucets, and condensation issues promptly.

Use dehumidifiers in damp areas such as basements or crawl spaces.

Keep food—including pet food—in sealed, airtight containers.

Wipe counters and floors regularly to remove crumbs and spills.

Declutter storage spaces to reduce hiding spots for pests.
